Deep under the Arctic Ocean, American submarine Captain Joe Glass is on the hunt for a U.S. sub in distress when he discovers a secret Russian coup is in the offing, threatening to dismantle the world order. With crew and country on the line, Captain Glass must now assemble an elite group of Navy SEALs to rescue the kidnapped Russian president and sneak through enemy waters to stop WWIII from beginning.

Hunter Killer, like its subject matter, has generally remained submerged, stealthily making its way into cinemas without so much as a splash. Which is a pity because its a fun, action sub marine thriller.

A US and Russian submarine are sunk by a mysterious foe deep in the Arctic Ocean and Captain Joe Glass (Butler) and his sub crew are sent to discover what has happened. What begins to unfold is a secret Russian coup which is threatening to send the whole world to the brink of nuclear war. The only way to stop it is for Captain Glass and a secret SEAL team on the ground in Russia led by Lieutenant Bill Beaman (Stephens) to rescue the Russian president to stop all out war.

The story is pretty straight forward and flows along seamlessly. Sure, there are couple of moments that are a little far fetched but hey, its a foot to the floor action film, what did you expect?

The pace of the film builds nicely towards the big showdown at the end and its literally all guns whether on land, sea, or even under the sea for that matter, blazing. Frustratingly though the CGI work is a little patchy with some scenes so obviously the cast standing in front of a green screen.

Butler more than delivers his best action swagger and Toby Stephens is great as the grizzled Navy SEAL making his way into enemy territory. Bittersweet to see Michael Nyqvist as the Russian submarine commander (you'll remember him as the 'baddie' from Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol) in one of his final roles before he passed away last year.

If you want a solid, action packed evening Hunter Killer is the sub you need to board.
