Wolverine is recovering from his injuries when he crosses paths with the loudmouth Deadpool. They team up to defeat a common enemy.

Although I’ve been a fan of Marvel movies long before the MCU, even with decades of fandom under my belt, I felt Marvel-ed out. Some of their cinematic releases, especially in the Covid years, were more misses than hits and there are seemingly so many TV shows that I’ve barely been able to keep up. It felt like Marvel movies kinda needed to be saved. And Deadpool with his Wolverine sidekick has done that, hands down. With all the irreverence and bloody violence that we’ve come to expect from Deadpool, a full blooded bromance with Wolverine and a shot of nostalgia, Deadpool & Wolverine is not only the resurrection of the MCU but one of the best films of 2024.

Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) has given up life as Deadpool. That is, until he’s recruited for a mission, which sets in motion a series of events involving Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), a telekinetic villain (Emma Corrin) and the very likely end of several universes.

I’m not gonna really talk that much about the story in detail, there’s so much that could be spoiled that you need to experience without even a hint of what’s in store for you. What I will say is that at the very heart of the story is Wade trying to find purpose and Wolverine trying to forget his past misdeeds, both extremely universal themes but brilliantly realized here.

But at the heart of it all, Deadpool & Wolverine is a bromance and Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman are completely outstanding here. You get sucked in, straight away, to their electric banter and one upmanship. This is what we’ve come out to the movies to see and it is magnificently beautiful.

The one liners zing throughout at such a rapid pace that you can’t remember anywhere near all of them but they will have you in absolute stitches as they mock 20th Century Fox, their R-rating, toupees, and even their own personal lives.

Is the multiverse, time travel thing a little convoluted? Probably. Is it stacked full of nostalgia? Yup, if you’re a fan you will be whooping with delight. But at the end of the day, the narrative weakness and nostalgia doesn’t dominate the film at all. You will have an utter blast and walk out with a stupid grin on your face. Then you’ll be heading straight back to the box office que to buy another ticket to experience it all again.

With all the irreverence and bloody violence that we’ve come to expect from Deadpool, a full blooded bromance with Wolverine and a shot of nostalgia, Deadpool & Wolverine is not only the resurrection of the MCU but one of the best films of 2024.
