What is the lost story of 'the other Mozart'? A new feature documentary investigates a 250 year old musical mystery.

From multi-awarded Director/Producer Madeleine Hetherton-Miau and Producer Rebecca Barry, Mozart's Sister is a ‘musical-true-crime’ story that explores the lost talent of Maria-Anna Mozart. For the first 16 years of her life, Mozart’s sister shared equal billing with her brother.

Musical partners and collaborators, Wolfgang Mozart and Maria-Anna Mozart played together before Kings and Queens, and were the talk of Europe. Forced to withdraw from public life because she was a woman, a stunning new investigation explores why she was retired and what happened to her music.

Throughout the years there has been exploration, some of it more fantastical instead of based in fact, while Mozart’s Sister takes a more forensic examination of the facts of the life of Maria-Anna and in the process discovers an astounding story.

We find that, unsurprisingly, even though Maria-Ann shared a similar musical gift to that of her famous brother, in a world dominated by men, these societal pressures forced her out of the limelight, nearly lost to history.

And while the tale of Maria-Ann is thunderously powerful, it is the mirror that holds up to our current culture and also in the world of classical music composing and conducting, is a reminder that the fight is still not over. One of the most inspiring moments of the film is seeing women come together to train and be mentored through the Glover Edwards program, formed and run by women composers and conductors.

And it's fitting that in one of the final scenes of the film, we see that Maria-Anna’s final home is now being used as an art gallery which celebrates forgotten artists. Even in death, Maria-Anna is giving voice to the voiceless, something that she never had.

A thoroughly intriguing exploration of a figure which was almost lost to history, Mozart’s Sister is a clarion call for the appreciation and elevation of the voice of women in the arts.
